National Chili Day…Mmmm!

Today is the ‘official’ day of CHILI! Is there anything better than a spicy bowl of beans, cheese, and beef paired with an icy cold glass of milk? I sure can’t think of anything. Some may disagree, but you can’t deny that calcium plays a large role in chili.

DASHing to Lower Hypertension

Hypertension (high blood pressure) affects 1 in 4 adults in the United States. Another 25% of adults have blood pressure readings considered to be on the high end of normal. High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because it has no symptoms and can go undetected for years. It is important to have your blood pressure checked regularly. Researchers found that in just 8 weeks, people following the DASH diet saw their blood pressure decrease.

National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week

Recovery begins with a Cardiac Rehabilitation program. February 14-20 is National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week. This week helps to highlight the role of prevention and education in the treatment of heart disease. Cardiac Rehab is a medically supervised program designed to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall physical and mental performance. The goal is to reduce the risk of another cardiac episode or to keep an already present heart condition from getting worse.

DMS Takes Advantage of Fuel Up To Play 60!

Decatur Middle School in Indianapolis has fully embraced the Fuel Up To Play 60 initiative. It has allowed collaboration between administration, food services, students, and the physical education and health teachers. The Colts Fitness Camp provided students with the opportunity to make a difference in their lives, while the taste testing event allowed them to take a leadership role in impacting healthy food choices for the entire school.

Superbowl Party Recipes

  Blue Buster Smoothie  1 (6-ounce) container low-fat blueberry yogurt 1/2 cup apple juice 1/3 cup fresh or frozen blueberries 1/3 cup frozen sliced peaches 5-6 ice cubes Blend all ingredients with ice (amount of ice will vary depending on desired consistency). Pour into a glass and serve chilled.
